Oscar and Grammy Winner Music composer AR Rahman has broken his silence on the continuing debate over growing intolerance in the country.
Speaking at the International Film Festival in Goa (Panaji) AR Rahman said "India is the land of Mahatma Gandhi who showed the world that revolution can be brought about through non-violence.We must set an example for the world."
He termed the (Award wapsi) protests against the perceived intolerance in the country as "Poetic" since it is non-violent in nature.
Backing actor Aamir Khan, who has come under heavy criticism for his rising intolerance statement
Rahman added "I have gone through something similar some time ago. And at that time, I had also mentioned that nothing should be violent. We are ultra-civilised people. It is a chaotic protest. We should show the world that we are one of the most civilised cultures."
A while ago, Mumbai-based Raza Academy issued fatwa against him after he composed the music for Iranian film 'Muhammad: Messenger of God'. Raza Academy had claimed that the title of the film disregarded the Prophet. Rahman had to face huge opposition from fringe groups and his shows in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh were cancelled due to the controversy.
Rahman said in an interview on the sidelines of NFDC film Bazaar."Everything should be done classily and any kind of revolt should be classy. I think it is very poetic what people are doing rather than hitting each other."
